Silly Words!

Once There Was an Elephant

Once there was an elephant..
Who tried to use the telephant.
No! No! I mean an elephone...
Who tried to use the telephone!
(Dear me! I am not certain quite
That even now I've got it right.)

However it was he got his trunk..
Entangled in the elephunk..
The more he tried to get it free,
The louder buzzed the telephee..

(I fear I'd better drop this song
of telephunk and telephong.)

This is a silly little poem I memorized when I was young and I told and retold it many times to my own children. It was written by Laura E. Richards who died the year I was born, 1943.)

Talking about silly and mixed up words, these are a few that we all got a laugh from.

When Kevin was little a Sandwich was a "Famwich" and Aaron always ate "pan-a-cakes. Aaron also said "Bus-ketti" or was is "Pus-ketti" or "ska-betty", he tried them all. Ska-betty was one of his favorite foods!

Vaughn and Lacey always argued as to whether or not it was "goo-low" or "gill" when they tried to say girl. Brenda laughed because when she was living in England they pronounced it "gill". She told them that her brother had to go to speech therapy for saying it that way.

I remember way back in my past, when I was 5 or 6, a friend of mine had an uncle Fred. I thought that was the strangest thing to name someone Fred. I thought they might just as well named him "Needle and Fred".
